Postnatal recovery and recuperation
In Classical Chinese Medicine the first month following birth are a very important time for both you as a mother and your child. For women, childbirth is traditionally seen as one of the Gates of Life.
How you look after yourself now can set the scene for this next period of your life. This includes your menstrual cycle, future fertility and pregnancies, and also how you experience the menopause.
The Chinese practice of “Sitting the Month’ ensures you have the time and support for the proper rest, both emotional and physical, as well as a focus on nourishment and recuperation.
In the West, there is often pressure to get back to “normal life” as soon as possible. The flip side is that over taxing oneself at this stage can slow the recuperation process and, in some cases, lead to an appearance of postnatal issues. These issues may be out of character for the woman, and potentially linger until the next Gate of Life, the menopause.
Encouragingly, this recovery period is becoming increasingly recognised in the West as the “Fourth Trimester”.
A focus on nourishing and recuperation through diet, balancing emotions, and addressing issues can help encourage your recovery and prevent any longer lasting disharmonies from appearing.

Babies don’t have diaries…planning your postnatal care
Babies don’t have diaries, so I offer a flexible service that works with the uncertainties around birth. Getting a date in the dairy now for your first postnatal treatment means there’s one less thing to think about in the hectic days following birth.
If it hasn’t been possible to plan then don’t worry, acupuncture can still help support you no matter what stage you are at. Just get in contact and I’ll be happy to advise how I can support you.
Typical postnatal treatments and support
First 3 days following birth
This is a cleansing period for the mother. Once this is finished your body can start the rebuilding process.
During this time it is important to rest, and avoid exposure to wind and cold or anything that will disrupt the harmony of your emotions.
The next 30+ days
Pregnancy and birth are a very demanding time for your body. The body needs time to rebuild the blood and energy lost through birth. This concept applies to all women, not just those who feel exhausted following a difficult pregnancy or childbirth.
Mother Warming
7 to 10 days post birth. A gentle treatment to warm the abdomen and lower back using moxa to encourage healing. Your birth partner and baby are welcome too.
Postnatal Acupuncture
From 10-14 days until 6-weeks post birth. Acupuncture, moxibustion and dietary advice designed to aid recovery by encouraging the body to build good quality blood and qi. Address any postnatal issues and prevent disharmonies occurring.
Postnatal treatment is individually tailored to each individual depending on the type of birth experienced and the health of the mother.
If possible, we also recommend attending Labour Preparation appointments in the weeks leading up to birth, starting from 36 weeks.
